A: I do. I love letters as opposed to e-mail. But I’m old-fashioned that way.

Q: Warner Bros. has already bought the film rights to The Best of Me. You will be a producer on this film along with Denise DiNovi. How often is an author also a producer for the movie version of a book he/she has written? Is this unprecedented?

A: I’m sure other authors have served as a producer of their work; some have even directed. But it was somewhat unprecedented for Warner to agree to that – and purchase the novel--before I’d written a single page.

Q: Of all the movies based on your novels, which is your favorite?

A: I’ve been fortunate in that all the movies have been well-done and all have been successful, so I don’t have a personal favorite. I can say, however, is that, at the current time, The Notebook seems most likely to become a classic.

The Best of Me Free movie Watch Online, However, the most distracting and near-fatal incongruity is the choice of Bracey as the younger Dawson. There is no way and no how that this actor would ever grow up to be Marsden. For one thing, he actually looks older. Not only that, he doesn’t look, act or sound like him. What is even sillier is when Monaghan’s Amanda makes the observation to Marsden’s Dawson, as they find themselves falling for each other again, that “somehow you’ve gotten better looking.” And she is, of course, right.

The one pleasant respite is whenever Gerald McRaney shows up in the flashbacks as Tuck, a gruff yet caring former military man and widower who becomes a second father to Dawson after he runs away from home. And pros that they are, Marsden and Monaghan make for a very pretty couple as they manage to stay committed to their characters, no matter what trite nonsense trickles out of their mouths.

At a certain point, though, the coincidences and tragic incidents start to pile up at a startling rate and nothing can be taken seriously. Not that you don’t see these developments coming from miles away.

If a pediatric cancer charity is mentioned, a kid will end up having cancer.

If a parent hosting a fancy party asks his daughter’s dirt-poor suitor to check out his collection of vintage cars, the door will soon be shown.

If someone is told to be careful behind the wheel, a car crash is not far behind

If a vehicle waits as the lights start to flash at a train crossing, something bad is about to occur.

And if a character reveals that they once had a drinking problem that is now under control, they will be shown popping a cork on a wine bottle for a cozy dinner for two in the very next scene and downing Budweisers (the official beer of rekindled affairs, apparently) while on a picnic.

No, that last bit doesn’t make sense. But little of “The Best of Me” does.

Watch The Best of Me Movie Streaming Free, What drove them apart despite their obvious mutual love was her respectable family’s fear that his family’s criminal past (and, it turns out, present as well) were too objectionable and threatening.

The adapted screenplay that veteran director Michael Hoffman (Gambit, Soapdish, Restoration, One Fine Day, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, The Emperor’s Club, Game 6, The Last Station) co-wrote with Will Fetters and J. Mills Goodloe is based on the 2011 Sparks novel of the same title.

For most of its running time, The Best of Me is an effective tearjerker, which means it’s a weepie that isn’t creepy or sleepy.

Early on, the film overcomes our resistance despite the familiarity of the approach, and we find ourselves sufficiently absorbed and appreciative of the slight edge that the otherwise sentimental material offers.

But in the final reels, the narrative goes off the rails.  Hoffman’s script backs the film into a corner that only the most blatantly synthetic coincidence can get it out of, and offers a resolution that is so contrived it will make even members of the target demographic laugh out loud.

Laugh at, not with.

Both Marsden (who replaced the late Paul Walker, who was originally cast) and Monaghan have done plenty of creditable work prior to this -– he in such films as X-Men, Hairspray, Superman Returns, Enchanted, and Death at a Funeral; she in, among other titles, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Mission: Impossible III, Gone Baby Gone, Source Code, and television’s “True Detective.”

Here they both get the chance to shine in lead roles that showcase them more fully, and the script’s limitations and failings don’t really undermine their performances, which are lived-in and natural, although it doesn’t help that the actors cast as the teenage protagonists look distractingly inappropriate as younger versions of these two main characters.

But we’re so taken aback by the events in the late going that just about all the goodwill already generated is wiped away in a flash.

So be prepared to reunite 2 stars out of 4. The best of The Best of Me comes early, but this romantic drama is betrayed by its painfully wrongheaded third act.
