And when he speaks, in a low guttural croak and through a crooked Cheshire Cat grin, it’s usually to utter his own horrid name, stretching out each syllable for dramatic effect. He is the dreaded Babadook—or Mister Babadook, to those who haven’t made his ghastly acquaintance—and not since Robert Englund first slipped on a striped sweater and brown fedora has a film conjured up a bogeyman of such primal, classical dread. Believe it or not, though, the real horror of this superb Aussie monster movie has almost nothing to do with the title fiend and everything to do with the unspoken, unspeakable impulses he represents. Remove the Babadook from The Babadook, in other words, and something plenty terrifying remains.

Samuel’s father died in a car accident, while rushing his mother to the hospital to give birth to him, and it’s clear from the opening moments of the film that the subsequent seven years of parenthood have been no cakewalk for Amelia. Her boy, possessed of a common but overactive fear of monsters, acts up at school and brandishes homemade weapons. Perhaps he’s merely absorbing and channeling the duress of his mother, who’s so scarred by the loss of her true love that she won’t let Samuel celebrate his birthday on his birthday. The situation goes from bad to much, much worse when Amelia discovers the world’s creepiest pop-up book, filed mysteriously into their home library; reading it aloud not only gives her high-strung son a new anxiety, but maybe provides him a real, supernatural reason to feel anxious. As the book warns, through nursery rhyme and disturbing illustration, “you can’t get rid of the Babadook.”

Watch The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Full Movie 2014, Katniss Everdeen becomes the face of a revolution in “Mockingjay — Part 1,” a tricky transitional episode of “The Hunger Games” franchise that abandons the reality-TV bloodsports of the first two movies to conjure a dour, grimly escalating vision of all-out war.

Unsubtly resonant, at times quite rousing and somewhat unsatisfying by design, this penultimate series entry is a tale of mass uprising and media manipulation that itself evinces no hint of a rebellious streak or subversive spirit: Suzanne Collins’ novels may have warned against the dangers of giving the masses exactly what they want to see, but at this point, the forces behind this hugely commercial property are not about to risk doing anything but. It’s a sensible if not exactly inspired strategy, and with Jennifer Lawrence once more carrying the proceedings and director Francis Lawrence (no relation) dutifully replicating the elements of an inherently cinematic story, Lionsgate’s plans for worldwide B.O. domination look secure.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay  For the millions who have devoured Collins’ bestselling trilogy and are awaiting this movie with an obsessive fervor equal to that of the most rabid “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” fans (who also had to see their beloved franchises end on a maddening two-part note), the only real source of suspense here lies in the crucial question of where exactly Collins’ story has been cleaved in two. Rest assured, the decision has been made with near-Solomonic wisdom, allowing for just enough incident to sustain this relatively trim two-hour setup until its quasi-cliffhanger of an ending, while leaving several big twists to come in “Part 2” (due out Nov. 25, 2015), along with a presumably epic final showdown. Audiences coming to this film with no prior knowledge of the material, however, may feel their patience squeezed and their appetite for action a bit neglected; following the bright-hued battle-royale spectacle of its predecessors, “Mockingjay” reveals a darkening shift in mood, emphasis and color palette as it decisively exits the arena and literally burrows underground.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay  After shooting the fateful arrow that brought the Quarter Quell edition of the Hunger Games to a tumultuous close in “Catching Fire,” Katniss (Lawrence) was rescued and brought to the ultra-secret District 13, a large, gray-walled subterranean bunker that houses a growing movement bent on uniting the other districts of Panem and overthrowing the Capitol and its totalitarian President Snow (Donald Sutherland, marvelously menacing as ever). The leader of the uprising is the poised, formidable President Coin (Julianne Moore, who seems to have taken hairstyling tips from Meryl Streep in “The Giver”), who urges Katniss to officially embrace her role as the Mockingjay, the rebellion’s fiery, feathered figurehead. As masterminded by Coin’s media-savvy associate Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman, in his second-to-last bigscreen appearance), Katniss will be sent into the war zone to star in a series of propaganda videos, or “propos,” designed to go viral (or its nearest Panem equivalent) and further stoke the fires of revolution across the nation.

As ever, complications emerge stemming from our heroine’s indeterminate romantic feelings toward the noble, self-sacrificing Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), her two-time partner in the Games and her public love interest. Now being held at their Capitol, Peeta is regularly trotted out on live TV to be interviewed by the smarmy Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci, seeming ever more like Regis Philbin’s evil twin), where, under duress, he urges Katniss to quell the uprising; clearly, Snow and his regime are trying to take down the Mockingjay by dangling their own reluctant mascot in front of the camera. To the understandable chagrin of her longtime companion, Gale (Liam Hemsworth), who has bravely joined the fight against the Capitol, Katniss seems more invested in Peeta’s safety than anything else, including the success of their cause.

Like the novel, the screenplay (penned by franchise newcomers Peter Craig and Danny Strong) ably conjoins elements of political thriller, combat movie and mass-media satire, weaving a dense network of unsteady alliances, secret conspiracies, ratings-minded power plays and the always-knotty entanglements of love and war. It helps that some of Collins’ storytelling devices, particularly her critical inquiry into the temptations of overnight fame and the uses and abuses of televised propaganda, feel naturally suited to the screen — a fact that director Lawrence and his “Catching Fire” d.p., Jo Willems, have exploited to canny effect. An early sequence finds Katniss stumbling through what remains of her home village of District 12, which Snow’s forces reduced to rubble in the wake of her escape from the arena; it’s a picture of bombed-out, skull-ridden horror worthy of Vereschagin’s “Apotheosis of War” and other visions of hell on earth.

What he eventually comes to see, however, is that Noni was begging for someone to encourage her to stand up for herself. Kaz does that, suggesting she pull back from the dirty side of the music business that she hates, be honest with her over-controlling mom, and perhaps try recording one of her own songs instead of the junk the label keeps pushing her toward.

"That night with the balcony," Noni later tells Kaz, "you saw the goodness in me and it kept me hanging on 'til I could finally see it in myself. … That fantasy girl went over the balcony and the real Noni Jean got pulled back up."

Kaz, too, gets a few new opportunities after saving Noni. Called a "hero cop" on TV, he decides to run for a local councilman's seat. "I want to be a brother who makes a difference," he earnestly tells a group of potential supporters.

Beyond the Light Noni and Kaz fall in love. (How could they not, right?) And though there are a number of other business and relational obstacles they have to overcome, they eventually both sacrifice previous goals to stay true to each other and the things they believe in. "Truth is the only safe ground to stand on," Noni proclaims.
Spiritual Content

Kaz's father warns him about associating with Noni. "You didn't meet in church," he tells his son. But Kaz retorts, "Church girls are the ones you gotta look out for." Two local pastors consider throwing their political clout behind Kaz.
Sexual Content

Noni is a Rihanna-esque songstress who wears any number of (very) revealing and/or see-through outfits in bump-'n'-grind, slap-your-backside-and-grab-your-crotch stage performances. Even when offstage or away from the public eye, she's often in very brief short shorts and tube or crop tops. A magazine photo shoot has her strip down to only panties and a well-placed arm. Throughout, the film's camera examines her closely, leaving very little to the imagination.

At a party, Noni twerks on Kid Culprit and kisses him. During a stage performance, Kid tries pulling off Noni's clothes and roughly forces her into several mimed sex acts—including oral sex and rape.

Kaz strips off his shirt to reveal his chiseled torso. He and Noni spend much of three days naked in bed together having sex as often as possible, draped strategically in sheets. Noni once blindfolds Kaz, climbs up on his lap, opens his fly (off camera) and has sex with him.

As discussed, Noni attempts suicide by trying to tumble off the top of a building. When Kid Culprit gets mad on stage he manhandles Noni and slaps her down. Watch The Theory of Everything Online megavideo, Marsh has proven himself an expert stylist in his dramatic features (“Shadow Dancer,” his chapter of the “Red Riding” trilogy) as well as his documentaries (“Man on Wire,” “Project Nim”), and he works with d.p. Benoit Delhomme to lend this film a richness of color and texture that keep any sense of British period-piece mustiness at bay. The effect is heightened by Johann Johansson’s score, whose arpeggio-like repetitions and progressions at times evoke the compositions of Philip Glass, working in concert with Jinx Godfrey’s swiftly edited montages to lyrical and emotionally extravagant effect. John Paul Kelly’s production design, Steven Noble’s costumes (entailing 77 wardrobe changes to complete Redmayne’s disheveled-academic look), and well-chosen Cambridge locations uphold the film’s high production standards across the board.

Amid the fine supporting cast, Simon McBurney and Emily Watson make welcome, too-brief appearances as Stephen’s father and Jane’s mother, respectively, both of whom get at least one scene in which to dole out loving, sensible advice.
